POMPEII
Yesterday, we (0) learnt about Pompeii. The city of
Pompeii was buried under ash (1) after the
eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD.
Pompeii was (2) part of the territory of Ancient Rome. It was founded in
the 6th century (3) BC and it
became a Roman colony. It had many of the characteristics of a Roman town.
There was an (4) aqueduct to
bring water to the city. There were also an (5) amphitheatre, a circus and a theatre where people could enjoy
performances. As in other Roman towns, there was a water system and the roads
were paved with (6) stones.
Pompeii was (7) discovered in 1748. When it was excavated, (8) many of the buildings were still intact. Under the city, a
large number of artefacts had been (9) preserved, telling us what life was like then.
The 11,000 inhabitants
of Pompeii died instantly (10) when Mount
Vesuvius erupted. Their remains have been found in the exact position in which
they died.
